It's a great tutorial for starting out. My suggestion is if your Mac can load up an alternate OS, then load a Linux Live CD distro and experiment with the following three tools:
- Blender (for modeling)
- Inkscape (for vector editing)
- Scribus (for digital publishing)
With those three in your arsenal you have every piece of software you need to create a comprehensive paper model workflow from start to finish.
Here's an example of a very simple "model" I created with these applications. They give you a very polished final product that is lightweight and doesn't require special applications for someone to build (i.e. Pepakura's PDO format).
