Exactly. Besides, there is an addon for latest Blender builds, enigmatically called "paper ,model". This enable unfolding, and even allow one to add helping tucks. It's automatic, so no particular control for it, but one can easily remove them after in any vector program.

Mine may be a bit lower tech but I simply use pages (built in on a mac) and don't have many problems with it. As long as you know what size in inches your items should be it works quite well.

I think what you're looking for is here:

New Free E-Book About Paper Model Design With Blender 3D

It's a great tutorial for starting out. My suggestion is if your Mac can load up an alternate OS, then load a Linux Live CD distro and experiment with the following three tools:
  • Blender (for modeling)
  • Inkscape (for vector editing)
  • Scribus (for digital publishing)

With those three in your arsenal you have every piece of software you need to create a comprehensive paper model workflow from start to finish. Here's an example of a very simple "model" I created with these applications. They give you a very polished final product that is lightweight and doesn't require special applications for someone to build (i.e. Pepakura's PDO format).

A bit old thread, but anyway, all three mentioned apps work in OS X. No need for messing with linux.
