Well, using the add-on in blender worked... and ended up being a bit easier than pep in a number of respects.

I do have two questions about it though...

How do you define how much space should be placed between the 2D parts? I have some that are very close to each other (nearly touching).
Can you specify which side of an edge the flap appears on?

Did you check the BlenderArtist forum link? it runs 19 pages with the latest update from the creator if this script just last August. And it seems he's very responsive to bug/feature requests and user help.

influence on unfolded parts

Hello Thales,

you asked whether there is a way to see the unfolded mesh before exporting.
No there isn't!

In so far i use the Kartonbau Script as well as the Addonscript from Addam.

But there is another way to handle your problem, you can choose in which format you export the textured mesh. I use the SVG Option means the exported mesh ist exported as a scalable Vector Graphic. This SVG File can be opened in Inkscape as well as in Corel Draw. There you can position it wherever you want to.
Since the Script always eports no more then one mesh, by this method you can put more meshes on one side! Well as long as the side is not full.
Using inkscape has the advantage that you can sve the file as a PDF File.
https://inkscape.org/en/release/0.92.2/

Don't worry inkscape is absolute free Open Source!
So you can print it out or take it with you (on a usb stick) if you prefer
Then just print it!!!! Good Luck

Thomas

Hello Thales,

there a few you tube videos about the unfolder script and its potential:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9gR4Om9tIQ

Your request reveals some weakness of the script, i would also prefer a preview for the unfolded mesh, but consider please that addam has developed his script beside its studies. I tried to write such a script for myself before i knew Addams script and i failed!!!!

In so far i have many respect for Addam and his script.

The only workaround is, to use the kartonbau script. This offers the option to unfold the mesh and export it in the next step. But this script doesn't has the ability to unfold textured meshes, respectively to export textured meshes!

Okay Thales i hope i could help you

Thomas

Thanks guys. I'm familiar with inkscape... so that should work. And I do appreciate all the effort that has gone into building the capability to unfold a model. It is a ton of math, approximations, and educated guesswork to make it happen in a semi-automated manner.

I have built a 3d model of a hawk missile as a litmus test, and I'm trying to perfect the unfolding and presentation parts of the workflow. Then I'll move on to more complicated things.

Thanks for the insight. I need to prep the files, but the 1/16 Hawk came out decently.
