Clear spray for artwork. Many different brands in art and also craft shops.
It is designed specifically for application over printing, drawings and paintings etc.
Available in matt, satin and gloss.
There are alternatives but this is made for the job.

If it's affordable or available, depending on where you live...

I have experimented with cheap off the shelf matt recently and have found one that seems to work fine. Price difference - one third the cost if what I used.

yeah, sprays do the job nicely and fumes are easy to extract.

if applying eg. wood varnish by brush - its gonna smell....(long) but I know people use wood varnish with great result. it makes card more rigid (applied only at printed side), prevents paint sinking in quickly into paper/card and secures it after. but its usually more than one coat.

Be aware, there are different types of craft varnish - acrylic, enamel so on. I've used many types - cant really say which ones as I had whatever was available at the time (and rattlecans had changed graphics often to add to the confusion xD) . After application wait with second coat as if you dont, you will have white frosting appearing.

hope that helps

Wood varnish applied by brush on one side only will generally cause warping as it shrinks when it dries. I know from experience, buggered up two card buildings.

The advice is very good. I think you will be guided and you will have to try, the products are not the same in all countries, for example the spray varnish does not work for me and instead a lacquer that supposedly is bad for the paper does work. It is similar to the theme of the edges, you must experiment until you get what you want.
