Aleene's Max Tacky Adhesive

While looking for an Aleene's product called TACK-IT OVER & OVER, found this adhesive on their website: https://www.aleenes.com/aleenes-max-tacky-adhesive

Says good on the following materials:
Wood
Metal
Paper
Ceramics
Stone
Most plastics
Glass
Non-oily surfaces

Dry time is rather long: 2-4 hours, max strength in 24-hours.

Anybody try this?

Mike

This is the first time I have heard of it. Will keep an eye out for some and then give it a try. The Crafter's Pick The Ultimate! glue I have been using is good.

Very interesting. I'll have to check that stuff out. I usually use the Turbo Tacky stuff, but I do have a bottle of The Ultimate! that I use for particularly stubborn parts. I even glued a brick back together with it.

Talking of Turbo Tacky, haven't seen any at Walmart, Hobby Lobby or Michael's the last couple of months. Only the regular glue is available. Anyone else notice this or is it just my local area (Memphis).

Hi Mike,

I am just trying Aleene's for the first time, Been using it for about a week now. All I have ever used is Elmer's school glue. Here are my first thoughts.

* Much thicker than Elmer's

* Short open time, about 20 min. after that it gets REAL thick but still usable.

* Holds parts together very well and quickly.

I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby, a 4oz bottle was $3.99 USD. Purple bottle, says "Fast Grab tacky glue"

I would say that this will become my everyday glue. I have a small arsenal of glue, elmers, Aleene's, super glue gel, and Elmers glue stick.

I have always used PVA white wood glue. Large pots available from the DIY stores. Works fine. I was a big fan of Aleenes tacky clear gel glue. I used it for the more tricky parts, to be able to adjust after glueing. But it got too thick and snotty to use properly so I went out to buy some new. The hobby shop didn't have it. I bought Aleenes Tacky glue (the white stuff in the gold bottle) and I loved it immediately. It somehow is better than just the old wood glue. I use it in all my builds now. But I do really miss my clear gel.

My experience...in case anyone cares...

I started out building paper models with Contact Cement (the cheap stuff, from the Dollar Store, in a tube).
Applied with a paint brush, to both parts...let it set up for a a few seconds, then carefully and precisely connect the parts.
No second tries...but I actually had a lot of great success with it.

Then I found Aileens Tacky Glue.
It gave me more time to move parts around during assembly.
And could be cleaned up more easily from my hands, etc.

Immediately I stocked up on regular Tacky Glue, Fast Grab, Quick Dry and Clear.
I used them all and switched between them on every job.
At first, they all appeared to have their uses for me.

The first one I stopped using was the clear.
I originally bought it to affix clear plastic windows, but it doesn't work for that.
I didn't really have any other applications where I had to have a clear glue,
and anyway, regular PVA Tacky dries clear enough for most things.

Then I gave up on the Quick Dry...which didn't really dry that much quicker
and was too thick and sloppy in my opinion..
Maybe in certain types of craft projects, it has its place, but it didn't serve me in paper modeling.

Only one I hung on to for a longer time, was the Fast Grab.
It really does grab quicker than the regular stuff, but its thick and hard to squeeze out of the bottle.
And if I squeeze some out onto a piece of card (my usual routine for glue) it dries up too quickly.
It starts to thicken faster, causing me grief during application, or dries completely before I am done with my assemblies.

My point is... eventually I was down to the Regular Tacky Glue, and thats all I was using for everything.
Its all I am still using.
I grab some CA Glue for certain things, but I am satisfied using only the regular Tacky Glue.

And, the regular (Gold bottle) is the cheapest to buy...and it usually comes in those "Bonus size" bottles where you get extra for the same price.
I also like the new wide caps, allowing the bottle to stand upside down!
I always stored my glues upside down and they are always primed to squeeze.

....
Nothing holds like Wood glue, but it is slow to dry (when used in paper modeling)
and dries rock hard...maybe too hard for some things.
Johan Scherft always recommends using wood glue for things like stiffening leg joints on his bird models.
For everything else, he uses regular white PVA glue.
PVA and Craft Glues tend to be a bit more flexible, which is handy if your part needs some flexibiltiy, or you have to cut into it.

...
I have some of that Rocket Paper Glue...which is amazing.
Dries fast, grabs anything, really solid bond.

But, its very thin and runny...its hard to control where it goes sometimes.
Best to use a brush to apply, but the squeeze bottle and nozzle applicator are so tempting...and then you end up with glue everywhere!

And thats the other thing I don't like...its very sticky and harder to clean up than PVA glues.
If you get it on your fingers during assembly, you can end up making a mess of your parts.
I get very frustrated using it.

It comes in very handy with various things, but its not my main glue.

Hi Dave,

Contact cement? Never tried that, yet.

Started with superglue, had to be fast and correct of placement.

The found some Wiccoll Karton glue, on-line supplier shut the doors and I went through with-drawls. That was the best glue, but no longer available.

Tried most all of the Aleene's Tacky, preferred is the Gold bottle w/TURBO text on it.
