RCAF crest

Any of you RCAF experts out there hazard a guess to what the crest is on this DHC-4 Caribou? It was based in Trenton and I expect part of 8 Wing, Air Transport Command, maybe 440 Squadron, but I cannot seem to find a crest that looks like it would fit. I have contacted the Museum in Trenton, but no help. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Tough one - I have had a look at all the illustrations of RCAF crests I can find, and nothing comes close at all to the shape of the crest inside.

Is it possible it could be the crest of another airforce (RAF, British Army Aviation?) - perhaps from an exchange crew who operated the aircraft or if it was based outside Canada?

John,

This website has a list of the DHC-4 deployments, perhaps if you know the serial number than the time frame, you can figure the squadron.

RCAF Comets and Caribou

I also have a copy of Patrick Martin's RCAF Finish and Marking reference book. I'll take a look and let you know.

Thanks,
Gary

What Caribou? Where is it? Find better photos.

The colours (plane and in the crest) might indicate Navy.

Its just a squadron crest.
Why the Trenton Museum couldn't tell you that, is beyond me.
You just need to apply more info about the aircraft to narrow down which squadron.

Its not 125 Newfoundland Squadron...which has a Caribou on it!

How about Air Maintenance? It has a similar look to what I can see.

I found this 440 Transport Squadron but it does not look quite right.

Here is a sight with a buch of crests Heraldic Crests - Royal Canadian Air Force maybe one of them fits. Links at the top of the page takes you to other sets of crests.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have RCAF drawing 51817 that shows a 15-inch crest goes there, and the history has 5323 first with 102 composite squadron and then 424 Transport. It doesn't seem to look like the 424 crest, and could be it was with a 102 squadron crest (which I can find no reference at all). I was thinking it is in arctic scheme, but none of those crests seem to fit the colours either. There might be the far-off chance it was actually being used at the time of the photo by the SAR parachute guys with the high visibility markings. I think in the end, and at this scale, I will just use the 424 Trenton crest and fix it if any new info comes up.

If anyone comes across some new info, please let me know if this peaks your interest.

Laura at the RCAF Museum in Trenton suggested an 8 Wing crest, which I darkened and think looks about right. 424 Transport and other transport and northern squadrons are part of 8 Wing. Always nice to have museum people respond.
