Hi Dane,

What do you use to convert the photo to a usable item like what you show?

That is incredible how good it looks. I trace mine, but if you know of a way to convert like you show, I'm interested.

Hi, mbauer. I use a soft which name Akvis Sketch. This is russian software. You can find it on this site: Создание карандашного рисунка из фотографии с помощью AKVIS Sketch

Try FotoSketcher...its free.
It has many artistic effects.
You can convert photos to pencil sketches, pen and ink, etc
It takes a few adjustments to get the right effect, since each photo produces different results,
so there isn't one setting that works for everything.

But for assembly diagrams, the clean 3D drawing is the best option...and Mike's trace method works good.

I take many photos from various angles of parts in various states of assembly.
Sometimes I will shoot multiple stages all from the same angle.
Then I trace/draw my assembly diagrams and exploded views from those photos.
I create everything in CorelDraw.

Dave,

That is awesome! Complicated but very effective to create the actual part! Easy to see the order and parts need for each component.

Right Dave, that's what I use, Coreldraw, import the 3-D wire frame from autocad into it, do a trace.

Just to clarify...when I say 'trace', I mean actually trace by hand.

I import and resize/reposition a photo on the work area.
Then, I make it semi transparent...usually much less than 50% transparency.
I might also adjust colour/contrast/brightness if necessary.
Then I hand draw (vector) as if I am drawing on tracing paper.

For those who don't understand why I explained this,
Coreldraw has a "Trace" feature that can convert any artwork, drawing, photo or raster image into a vector image.
There are varying degrees of accuracy, you can control the detail and smoothing of the image.
You can also specify the number of colours used, line attributes, and more.
This is not how I create any instruction diagrams...but it has its uses.

lol at first I was thrilled with all those different styles of painting effects.
Oil, watercolour, etc

After I had wasted much time and overused many painting effects,
I settled on a couple of the sketching/drawing effects, which I use most now.

One of the Cartoon colour effects is a favorite...its a go-to effect for me.

I also use Corel PhotoPaint (which is companion to CorelDraw)...it handles raster and bitmap editing.
Most of the same colour and artistic effects (as Fotosketcher) are in there, although a bit more limited.

I often apply an effect to a photo or artwork in Fotosketcher, then copy and paste the image into PhotoPaint for more editing.
That might be normal image/photo editing, adding more artistic effects, or combining the image with other work and then saving the final image to use later.

I find written instructions often adding to confusion, not resolving it.3D drawings like airdave or Dane posted here are worth 2000 words each.Nearly every major paper model maker is using some kind of 3d drawings for instructions now.
