Preventing unauthorised sharing of model files

Hello,

Greetings from India!

I'm working on a few Indian Railway models which I plan to make available as purchasable files online. Either through Ecardmodels or through my own webpage.

My question is, what steps can I take to prevent people from posting the files for free on the internet, or probably sharing it with their friends. I am aware that it can't be fully avoided, but what steps can be taken?

Require help from other designers...

Regards,
Prabal

Hi Prabal,

Educate your clients! Build a good relationship so they will become loyal and happy customers and make them understand that in the end if they harm you financially - the designer - they will also harm themselves with less and less new products.

If you have the ressources, time and money, you can try to take action against sites or entities that use your material illegaly but I try to focus my energy on the positive side of things.

Simplest answer would be don't release it.

but Chris is correct, education is the key here.

I haven’t done this, but I always wondered if watermarking the background with a repeating background text identifying the you as the designer and the market place where it came from might work. At least it could further dissuade the theft by resizing the header and footer off the page, or covering with a slip of paper and scanning the page as a single image.

Just thinking out loud.

I like Rick's answer.
LOL
Lock your designs away, in a lock box, in a safe, in a vault.

Don't sweat it. It will give you a headache, and accomplish nothing. The people who steal kits weren't going to buy it anyway, so your not out anything.

Just thinking out loud.

Uhu tried covering the page (background) with stuff.
It just pissed everyone off because of the amount of printing ink required to print the pages!

When saving a file as a PDF, I have the options of restricting editing of the PDF page (a password is required to import the PDF into an editing software)
and
restricting printing of the page (read/eyes only).

Unfortunately, these encryptions don't work with all software, and people can still mess with my files.

What I would really like is some hidden code that deletes the file if you try to make a copy or upload it to the interwebs!
A self-destruct mechanism built in! lol

This paper model, if you choose to pirate it, will self destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck Mr Phelps.

I like your idea of Self-Destruct code embedded within the file! LOLz. Regarding the piracy of paid models and free sharing, what is practical is to release models for Free but to charge for special request repaints and mods. OR to TO DISCOVER A NEW FILE FORMAT WHICH ONLY ALLOWS PRINTING DIRECTLY FROM ONLINE WEBSITE BUT BLOCKS DOWNLOADS! ANYWAYS, PIRACY IS NOT AN ISSUE IF YOU COULD DESIGN AND SELL MORE AT SHORT TIME THAN THE PIRATES PLUNDERING & SHARING/SELLING IN THE MARKET.

Have a Good Day! Arrrrrggggg

Thank you so much for your valuable suggestions everyone!

@airdave
Loved the self distruct thing, tipped me off

What I think I will do is;
Add some light watermarks to the file and include copyright notices with the file...
I will also convert the PDF files into Raster format so that illegal repaints are further discouraged.
I would also request viewers on my YouTube channel to respect the designer and not make illegal copies...

Regards,
Prabal
