I used the Spruce Tree kit available from Fiddlersgreen. The largest tree in the diorama is the small tree in the kit. I then reduced that tree by printing it with photoshop as two copies of the same picture on a single sheet of plain copy paper. The kit does not include a tree trunk or base.

Next step accomplished; the pier is finished. I attached a few pictures. After building this from scratch, I have a extremely deep respect for the guys who design and build the complex models. I don't know how you do it! The strain, pain and frustration must get to unbearable levels at times. My hat is off to you!

Nice work! Very realistic but consistent with the style of the boat.

Thanks, Don. I haven't had anything to add until now. I am about halfway through the building process of the Victorian Cottage by Edmund Gillon. I thought the porch railings were tough, but access for a lot of the glue points for the roof are a real challenge! If you glue the building to a base before attaching the roof, you would not have the access to do a credible job of gluing the roof. But, without the base, the building is floppy enough to cause other problems with alignment. Wow! I am sure learning a lot of new techniques with this one. Anyway, here are some pics of what has been accomplished, so far.

I know that I haven't posted any info lately, but I am finishing up the Victorian Cottage this weekend. I ran into some structural fit problems that I had to resolve. I have finalized my design of the land/sea base and I will discuss that when I post the pics of the finished cottage, later this week. I have not started building the base, yet, so I am open to suggestions on ways to get my end result.

That went well; I wasn't smart enough to realize that the pics had to horizontally oriented.
Oh, well, on to the next subject. The next picture is a mock up for the diorama. The cottage will sit on a grassy hill, surrounded by various sized cedar trees (as used in the earlier diorama). It will face the water with a rock retainer wall. In front of the wall will be the pier with motor boat tied to the pier with mooring lines. A path will lead from the cottage to the retainer wall, where a set of wooden steps will lead down to the pier. The plastic water surface will support the hull of the boat. The protective case will have clear plastic sides that will allow the viewer to view all the way to the bottom of the body of "water" (thus the sandpaper bottom). This will put the under water parts of the pier and boat on display. Two of the "windows" below the water line will have a transparent film scene of fancy friendly fish. The third widow will have a film of a shark with his mouth open and facing the viewer. The message here is that even if things appear safe and sane, be aware of things around you, because "thar be sharks in them waters". Ok, your turn; you get to tell me what you don't like. Oh, one more piece of intel: the car in the picture is the car her father got her name from. ( No, her name in NOT GT . |

Dear missileer:
Is the boat a paper model? if it is where did you find it? Should be an interesting diorama. Nice work on the cottage very Victorian to my eyes. Model on, Miles |
