Vignette in a viewing box

Well that's what I'm trying to design, and I seem to have come across such a thing here, possibly a Victorian invention where you have a peephole and successive layers of 2-D that go to make up the overall picture with a 3-D effect. I think light would come through the back, a bit like the Viewmaster. But what is it called? Any pointers please! Thanks, Julian

If it had two eyeholes and lenses it would be one of those, but this is just one eyehole. Maybe that makes it a monoscope!

Hi Julian
You probably are looking for the terms "peep box", "raree show" or "tunnel book"
Best

So, a graphoscope is out too because it is for magnifying postcards for viewing.

Looks like someone could put different sections of a photo or painting on numerous glass plates and stack them to get a sort of 3D effect, using backlighting to enhance the view.

Thanks Hornswoggler, peep-show box came up with exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of. Have a look at this one to see the effect:

I shall have to have a look at the graphoscope though, all these contraptions!

Peep-show box. Looks interesting. Seems peep-show means a different thing now from what it did back then.

Are you thinking of the tatebanko 'Dance of the Gods at the Heavenly Cave'?
