HMV Hamburg Harbor Diorama 1:250
Hi everyone!
While reading on this forum I saw several threads about the beautiful HMV harbour diorama and I immediately knew I would like to build it myself. So after I finished my Eiffel Tower model I bought the HMV diorama. It will be my first model in this really small scale of 1:250 and I don't even know if I'm able to work with such small parts. But you'll never know it untill you try it... right?! So, I started a few weeks ago with the locomotive of the train, a complex part of the scenery. If I'm able to build this one, then I'll manage the rest of the project too I think... Pieces of this train are soo small that the white edges of the paper are good visible after the folding ore cutting, so I painted all the edges where possible. Also I made use of the laser cut set which comes with the model (if you want) It gives so much more depth and detail to the object! Progress went on very well and after only a few days I finished the locomotive. The result looks good! Time to move on to the next stage! |

I am glad to see another person building this magnificent diorama.
You locomotive looks terrific. With that level of skill, you should be able to produce a superb model. I eagerly look forward to seeing your busy harbor take shape. Don |

I wanted to put the diorama in some sort of display box, to keep it clean from any dust so I searched the web for a suitable case. But I could not find any glass boxes in the right dimensions. After searching a bit longer I saw this wooden- glass box for sale and it had almost the good shape, (maybe a bit too high) but I went for it. I think the diorama will fit in nice to it.
The dimensions of the inner floor are a few centimeters wider in lenght and a few smaller in depth so I could not use the original base plate that comes wih the model. I started to make my own base plate. I read some articles online about what should be the perfect color for the (harbour) water and some guy said he recommended "Dark Olive Green" so i painted my base plate this color. But after it dried I thought it was to green and it needed more blue color in it, so i bough a dark blue paint and mixed them together. The result is almost the same color as the original paper version. So I was satisfied with that! I also bought some led lights on battery power to put in top of the box fore some extra warm atmosphere. (I'm not finished yet with hiding all the wires) As you can see in the last picture I have extended the base construction of the dock so it wil fit nicely in the box. I made a print copy of the sheets so I can fill up the extra space I created.. |

I have almost completed the warehouse and the traintracks now. I'm not satisfied with the result of the tracks, because the paper is curved by the way it's glued to it's supports. I had read about this issue in another reports, but I thought it was to much work to make a reinforced structure so I build it the original way hoping for the best. At this time you can see it very good, but I think when the whole scenery is fully filled up with trains and cranes you won't see it anymore.
For the windows in the warehouse I used the lasercut set from another model of HMV and placed transperent paper behind it to get the glass effect. This worked out very well. Meanwhile I've also build two extra parts of the train. This weekend I start with the cranes... |

This week I've been working on the two cranes, each crane took me many hours te complete. So many pieces... They come with a lot of laser cut details. I found a nice graphite color paint for these laser cut parts. It was fun to work on, but 2 cranes is enough I wait with the cargo untill I finished the ships.

Excellent cranes and truck Remko.
Any further progress or are you giving it a rest for the moment? ------------------------- The case is great and I do not think it is too high - you will with the height be able to view the model better. What you could do though is look at some sort of backdrop - a simple landscape, and this would round off the impression and "fill the gap" visually.
