Operation: Desert Rescue

This thread will be following my monumentally epic new project, I'm expecting this to take a good year or more to complete. Consider this a build thread for the diorama itself, the individual vehicles will have their own threads.

The scenario is a small US military convoy has been despatched to salvage a downed Apache helicopter in the desert somewhere in the middle east.

First of all, before I get jumped by rivet counters, I have a feeling this will be rather realistically inaccurate. I seriously doubt they would use a truck like this to transport an Apache, but the idea came from a photo I saw of a plastic kit of this truck with a UH-60 Blackhawk on the back. The convoy needs to be fast... so no tanks. There is also the issue of "how did they get the chopper on the truck?" (Magic).

The idea behind the rest of this build came about by me not being able to decide on a single kit to build next... So I'm going to build all of them.

I'm going to build 2 Humvee's for this diorama, but not the one pictured above, I bought that years ago and it seems to be a bit too simple for my liking.

First cab off the rank: The M1070 and M1000

Interesting idea, if you want a tank add it the M1A1 has a top speed o 45 and you have to worry about about IEDs so you will not be going top speed. As for the truck they would be using the best unit they had in the area, if that truck was it they would use it. Good luck with the idea.

Anytime I've seen them salvaging downed helicopters, they just send in a Chinook and sling load the downed bird underneath it.

I like you're idea though (My grandfather was part of a crew that salvaged downed aircraft out of Luke AFB during WWII.)

Thanks for stopping by guys...

I decided against the Abrams because it was the most common vehicle seen on this HET. I wanted something different, originally I was thinking of some kind of heavy engineering unit, with a crane or something but there doesn't appear to be anything like that available, not a US one anyway. Then I thought about finishing my Dozer project and giving it a military upgrade... Then I saw the pic with the blackhawk on the back of one of these. I purchased the Maly Apache years ago, so it seemed like a good choice. It's 1:33 so I'll be upscaling it to 1:25 and then crashing it, which is going to be a fun part of this project on it's own.

If anyone knows of any good reference shots of downed Apaches, I'd be keen to see them. I'm looking for something without too much damage, just to get an idea of how I'm going to need to customise the kit.

Also, buy or rent the movie Fire Birds with Nicholas Cage, Sean Young, and Tommy Lee Jones, there are some scenes with the Apache of Tommy Lee crashed.

Thanks Rick. Pretty sure I'd already used that same search on google already but your link shows a few I haven't seen yet. That one on the rooftop in Taiwan is exactly what I was looking for.
