I really hate cones
As the title says I really hate cones. I'm building Elsocraft's Buzz Lightyear and really have a severe case of gaposis. Any clues as to how to fix it? Not sure if I'll rebuild it or leave it, but any clues would help.

From your pictures, my next try would be to build from the top down. Instead of building a left piece and a right piece, assemble the nose cone, then the next ring, etc.

I have to agree with Ray on this, depending how the other end is set up

They are a pain.
As was suggested start smallest end first an expand outward. When adding new pieces try this method: Anchor the new piece to previous assembled where it will close when finished. Work around one tab at a time gluing to the previous assembled. It's easier to show than explain. Here's the next piece of what I'm working on. I anchored it where it closes on itself when done. I work to the right gluing one tab at a time. When those are done I glue the tab to close the piece and anchor the next piece. While what you showed looked more spherical than conical (model geometry-wise) the same assembly technique works (for me anyway).

Also, once you have a section positioned correctly allow the glue to dry before moving to the next. Glue one tab at a time and allow the glue to set up. Usually around 10 seconds is enough time.

and pre-shape the part, that will help with the piece holding its shape, and the overall build

Cutting off the tabs and using joining strips can also help.

Yes spherical is what I meant. I'm re-making the part and will work from small end first as suggested, I did it the other way around for some reason. I also preshape the parts, but for some reason they wanted to go the way they did...Will repost after it's done. Thank you all for the suggestions.

Ha ha by the title I thought you were talking about sharp pointy cones.
I really really hate those :P For the rounded shapes I actually start wide and go to the end. Interesting to hear others go the other way round. Never tired it that way. Anyways I use no tabs except for the the ring's ends themselves. I then apply card inner tabs all way round. Assemble rings and then lightly brush some glue to the seam from the inside. The attached pix show how I do this. Hope it helps :D G1 |
