Well, another day and another $1.50 for Uncle Sam!
As I said earlier, I had decided to start on the reindeer next. I should have started on the reindeer FIRST! The rest would have probably looked like a piece of cake afterwards. With all the complex curves on this beastie, I will either build a huge amount of confidence or go stark raving mad.

Here is where I am right now. I have just finished the base portion of the head. The instructions say to curve the parts before gluing. What they DON'T say is that the curving has to be complex also. Otherwise, trying to match up the first glue joints becomes a real tug of war. Lots of initial frustration. They say that a day that you don't learn something is a day wasted. If that is true, then I should be able to take the next 30 days off (I figure that is how much I learned in the last 24 hours).

Happy Volker Advent Calander!
John

It is always nice to learn something new..... like how many ways can I drive myself to insanity!
John, it's looking great! Now you know why I stick to nice, square, buildings.... although, in my local files folder and in my head, I have some neat turreted mansions lurking around! Keep at it and have fun.... the frustrations make it sweeter! George

A little more progress; added the nose and eyes. The instructions say to add the nose section before the eyes. I found it easier to add the eyes first; then the nose section.

Here is a side view of the head. I started on the ears, but had a problem with the first one. Will have to reprint the ears and try again.

The ears are installed! And you see next to the head, the beginnings of the antlers. Talk about complex folds and shapes!

I will be off-line for a few days. To keep my wife happy, I am taking her to Williamsburg, VA to watch the great grandson of Charles Dickens do a one-man production of "A Christmas Carol".

Elliott,
Thanks,
We are having a mini-reunion (2 nieces; 2 grand nephews; 1 nephew (probable), my younger brother and his girl friend. We pick one night to stay up into the wee hours, playing an ancient card game called "Oh, Hell" ( in polite society it is called "Oh, Pshaw). Us Alabama boys aren't always polite.

George,
If you ever want to try one of those turreted mansions, I'll be there cheering you on.

Oh, my, you brought back memories. My grandmother who died in 1981 used to play 'Aw, Pshaw' with us kids while we were growing up.

Have a great time

Well, folks, I'm back. Poorer in coin, but richer in memories..

I am working on the antlers!@#$%. I apologize for saying that in mixed company. My mother taught me better. Any way, they are a challenge (I am not quite sure that is the correct word, but it will have to do). The photo does a better job of describing the situation. The antler sections that are complete are shown along side the flat version. I have one more section on this antler to complete and then I have to build the other antler. I am going for a Tullamore Dew now!!
