Marvin the Martian's Helmet

I used a pdo file from a Pepakura group on Facebook. I was surprised to find it there considering the file list turned out to be mostly cosplay armour and reads Batman, Batman, Batman, Batman, Batman, Batman, Batman, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, Batman, Batman, etc. One of the many reasons why I joined this forum after joining that one. The models here are more my kind of thing.

The pdo is in colour but I turned off the texture, rearranged the parts on the 2D view, and printed it onto colour paper. By doing that I saved ink toner and the joins don't reveal the white of printing paper. I used a felt tip pen to make a cartoony bristle pattern on the broom head part.

I began and finished this yesterday (to my surprise). The only bit I did today was to add some card inside the helmet to stiffen the connection between the helmet part and the broom head part (13th photo).

The progress was slow, real fast, then slow again.

The broom head was slowish. The way the parts fit together is odd but it does strengthen the whole thing. The main part of the helmet and visor went quickly and easily. It was attaching the visor to the helmet where things became really slow. Once the first glue tab was fixed, it was awkward to put glue on the rest and then get them in place and hold them there.

The visor, to strengthen its shape, has an inside wall. This gets in the way when fixing the visor to the helmet. And it can't be put on afterwards because some of the helmet's glue tabs are to be fixed to that part - and the same problem of little space to access glue tabs inside that wall would also apply.

Whinge, whinge, whinge.

But I still enjoyed making it. I made it for my wife. Marvin is one of her favourite loony tune characters.

I wasn't expecting the helmet to be so big (See the photo of me wearing it). Perhaps the idea is to paint a football black, paint on eyes and there would be Marvin wearing his helmet. I won't be going that far though.

Thumbs up

Haw, looks good!
Maybe you could put a paper liner of some sort in the helmet to make it fit better or cut the bill off of a ball cap and use that as a liner.
