How to make mast tower
Hi everybody, I am still rookie to paper model and want to ask a question about mast tower in WWII ship
I thought the mast can be done by rolling paper into desired dimension but it will be hard for small ones.I also thought about using some thing like small wood stick. Can you give me some more advice about this? Thank you very much |

Try thin brass tube or wire. That is what I use for all of my ship models.

wood dowels and bamboo skewers also work. The practice I prefer is to wrap and glue the paper part around a wood dowel (for smaller models, the round coctail toothpicks also works).

I use brass tube or rods, or plastic rod (from Evergreen)

There is nothing "wrong" with using rod or wire for these things... but you CAN roll them! You can try doing it out of paper instead of card if it makes it easier!

Using a fine wire to roll them, with enough glue so they are "pretty wet" would also allow you to make bends for "cranes", "Hand rails" etc, after you bend the tube with the wire inside, then you pull the wire out and yo have a tube straight or bent.

If I may add on to Z's comment... you can roll around successively smaller wires without putting on glue. Do it until the time when you can roll around a thin wire and one edge slips under the other. At that point it has rolled tight enough to be glued.
...but after the glue sets, it helps to reinsert a wire and roll again to smooth out the seam bulge. Carl |

You can also use dried grass stems. I use it for masts and guns. It has a natural taper and looks good. I sometmes coat them with CA for strength.
