Just to hazard a guess, accurate reference material (drawings, photos, etc.) of "historic" ships is much easier to obtain than for mordern (still in service) vessels. That said...what do you class as "modern?" Modelik has been releasing a series of cold war era subs, and there are some nice models of some patrol type craft and an assault carrier at ecardmodels.com.

Unfortunately we had a member who was as interested in these type ships as you are. He passed away last year, but he left a legacy of the models he did design.

Check out his stuff here:

ECardmodels.com Shop

And yes, I still miss Barry very much.

I have just finished building the superb model of the Thor Hyerdal class modern Norwegian frigate - available on ecardmodels as a paid download. The quality is up there with the best and it makes a very interesting model.

The Zumwalt class frigate is on Deviant Art as a free 1:400? download. Both the littoral defence prototpes USS Freedom and USS Independence are available from ecardmodels (at a small cost).

An Oliver Hazard Perry firgate is available as Orp Gen Pulaski from GPM. The IJN Kongo is the IJN built version of the Arleigh Burke class frigates (available as a free download and makes an impressive model). Or you can buy the stunning USS Ticonderoga model from HMV.

There are at least two models of the Swedish Visby class stealth corvettes and most of the German navy is available as a card model.

Some very good modern Chinese Navy (PRC) models have appeared recently, including a stunning patrol ship in dazzle camouflage.

And at the top end of the scale - the USS Forrestal has long been available from Wilhelmshaven (though may be hard to get now they have stopped trading) and the Nimitz is coming from HMV from what I have heard.

So there is more out there than you think. Might take some hunting or research (or ask a question here!). The habit of navies to sell off ships to minor navies works in you favour here.

Hope this helps

David
