A-4 paper in the US

What's a good source for A-4 size paper in the US. I could find it everywhere when I lived in the UK.

Look for 9"x12" tagboard at any local hobby store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I bought a pack and cut it down to size.

I go to Kinkos and have them cut down some 11x17 to the right size and use the cut offs for support inside the mode if needed.

I'm not sure how it is in the US but here my closest town is Taumarunui , pop 5136. The local print shop there can cut paper of most weights to any size for me in about twenty minutes i.e. long enough for me to finish my other shopping, and is still my cheapest source of quality paper...I'm just wondering if local print shops in the US wouldn't do the same for custom paper sizes..?

Yep, best bet to get actual A4 size is to get some 9" x 12" and trim it to 8.3" x 11.7". I have a trimmer with those dimensions marked off on the cutting scale.

If you cannot find a source of 9" x 12" locally you can get some from https://store.officeworld.com/.
Input tagboard in search box #1. Various colors, sizes, and thicknesses are available so make sure you get the 9" x 12" white if you go that route. The medium weight tagboard is about the same as 177gsm/65lb cardstock.

A poor man's method is to tape a 3/4 inch strip of paper to one end of 8 1/2 by 11 paper. The strip will have to be at top or bottom depending on whether the kit parts are printed close to one end (you don't want the parts printing over the strip). It works for me for old 1/50 scale Marek and Pmodels kits.

Another option is to rescale the model a couple of percent.

Amazon has A4 paper and 110Lb cardstock.
Several years ago, Staples did a special order for me of a package of A4 paper.

The easy solution is to buy legal size cardstock.
Tell your printer that it is A4 and it will print as if on A4.

you can always convert your A4 models to standard by resizing them.
If you have a painting program like Paint shop pro use the resize tool and resize it to 11.5 longer version with the aspect ratio it will make the width the proper size.
It works for me.

If you go this route, use the program "IRFANVIEW" to resize A4 images to Legal size sheets. Irfanview has a bulk image conversion feature which makes doing the same thing over and over to a lot of images relatively painless. Irfanview is donationware.
