Railings:Card or photoetch
I’m just starting the Digital Navy Oslabya
I’m looking at increasing detail with railings. Don’t feel like scratch building so I’m looking at the GPM card or photoetch railings. What’s the consensus, card or photoetch ? Are there other sources of 1/250 or 1/200 railings ? Thinks I advance. Leigh |

my experience with both are as follows; photo etch is very robust and resists the accidental squashing of the finished portions, but is a royal pain to get into the correct shapes of some complex superstructures. they have to be painted with at least acrylics or enamel. with card, bending into those complex shapes are easier, painting can be done with watercolor, magic marker or whatever. they tend to be less forgiving with handling and squash easily. if you spray any preserving material, matt acrylic or whatever they do being a little more robust. I model in 1/400 scale and find the card rails by jsc etc to be great.

ps, as a rule card is cheaper than the photo etch!

Metal railings from www.passat-verlag.de, they are termed "Zubehör" (extra parts), Z-2 for two-rails (excluding the lowest), Z-3 for three-rails, Z-4 for four-rails.
www.martin-weger.de offers cardboard lasercut, such as ladders, all sorts of rails, life rings, cable drums etc; LKK Fay (laserkleinkunst Fay, i.e. lasercut art Fay, www.lasermodelle.de) specializes in QM2 parts. Klick on 1:250 -> Wasserfahrzeuge -> Zubehör |

I use Photo-etch
I've found photo-etch to be perfect for my needs. So far I've used 1/200 and I/350 scale etch for my paper ship models.
There are several photo-etch companies available (here in the US anyway). I've used primarily Gold Medal Models etch as that company produces quality railing in multiple scales (1/700, 1/600, 1/400, 1/350, 1/200). Other companies include Toms, L'Arsenal, and Eduard. I do paint the railings with acrylic hobby paints prior to installation and then bend the railing to fit the curves of the deck(s). Photo etch can be a bit tricky to install if someone is a novice, but with some practice and patience, I think that it looks spectacular when carefully applied to ship models (either paper or plastic). I've had great success using white glue (Elmers or Alenes here in the US), as it is very forgiving when installing and dries slowly enough to make necessary adjustments. Go to you-tube to see how photo-etch is applied. There are quite a few tutorials out there. Good luck with you effort! |
