PVA's differ slightly - avoid the PVA you buy at stationery shops - the PVA bought in a hardware store for woodworking is often far better.

Alcolin is excellent if you can get it - I use it for all my building and stiffening. You can get it in-line in the UK - don't know about the USA/Canada. Not expensive at all either.

Minwax Wood Hardener; only stuff I know that will do what you need.
