Sticky tape

An old sign painter trick is to run the tape across your pant leg. This will definitely lower the tackiness of the tape and make it easier to use.

You used to be able to get 3M post it notes in tape, or roll format. I haven't looked for it in years it may still be available.

Try Blue Painters Masking Tape
Blue Painters tape seems to work perfectly for me. It has enough tak to hold parts yet peels off cleanly too. Try looking on Ebay for good deals, even the cheapest stuff seems to works well

I also use Tamiya Masking tape, which comes in roles of varying widths. Maybe a bit pricy though for "test" work.
