just fooling around in photoshop with a swirl pattern,.. hopefully it works when its smaller to match the scale for this build

here is just a screen capture of a test :D

it might be even able to be printed on transparent decal paper and attached to existing built cowls,.. (once i size it and fit it into the proper pattern)

the icon looks crappy but the fullsize image works,.. I tried to make the circles somewhat random,.. to make it look hand done,.. click on image to see it better,.. suggestions/critiques welcomed

The pattern looks good Mark but it needs to be much smaller.

yes for sure! I like to work big then reduce and "up rez" the file so it is sharp and photo rea,..l I will also fit it into the pattern so it works properly when folded,..

also i am going to rework the order of how the spirals are laid out,.. i was looking at the spirit of st.louis and noticed that the way the spiralling is laid out is in a different way I also notice that, that way is like that on other types of planes too

I would try printing this pattern onto Red River silver paper and building the cowl from that. Had to idea to try it myself, looking at a photo of the original Sopwith Tabloid which shows similar machining on the cowl - but that project's way down the list. You'll probably want to adapt the pattern to the parts so that the swirls match up across the seams.

I see you mentioned the layout, but it seems that you're very close - only need to rotate the pattern 30*. Check the picture of an E.III posted in Chris's thread:
