Using the suggestion in the link above where they apply curled strips of putty then paint another color, I wonder if you could do the same with the RR paper. Build the part shiny, then cover with pieces of putty, and hit with a light coat of flat gray spraypaint or simply a matte spray to give some flat and some shiny areas. Just a thought.

well thats a fair bit more work that I want to do. Part of my goal here is to apply some of the new techinques I just learned about.
Thanks though, its a great idea for a future build/experimentation

am I stupid or something?
(don't answer that)

is this an ecardmodels model?
or an FG model?
or what model?

Fokker Challenge? did I miss something?
this sounds really interesting Chris!

I'm not a big WW1 models fan, but that FG Contest Fokker got me interested.
and I just bought a Maty Modelarz Fokker triplane.
I want to know more about this project?

NOPE! Its a complete freebie challenge started by rick - click here for rules
Fokker E.III Challenge Rules

I like it because it allows me to practice EVERYTHING I just learned including working with red river paper in a less complex build.

Masking the RR silver, then spraying the matte coat will work. I've done it, but that would prove a rather intricate pattern to replicate.

Here is a perfect example of how the E.III cowling appeared.

http://www.atpm.com/7.01/washington-...-louis-420.jpg

The swirled texture was achieved by using a hand-held power buffing wheel and (I assume) a rubbing compound. This was a popular treatment of natural metal cowlings in the teens and 20s. You can see the effect being created in the movie "Spirit of St. Louis" starring General Jimmy Stewart.

If you are using silver paper (or aluminized paper), you can get the buffed aluminum effect by using a rubber eraser in a dremel tool (or, if you are so lucky as to find one, one of the electric erasers that old-school draftmen use).

Chris have you seen Ron's Fokker D.VI build. The tarnished aluminum effect on his cowling is very realistic looking.

He explans how he did it in post #66 here Marek's 1-33 Fokker D.VI
