Great find. I always found that era of Japan's history fascinating. I wonder if that was the period when the series "Zatoichi", the blind sword fighter (not sure if he was Samurai) took place. There are so many great Japanese movies about that era.

Hi Zathros

I think Zaitoichi was supposed to be late Edo period when things started to really fall apart and there were lots of gamblers (yakusa) and unemployed samurai wandering around looking for their next meal.
Zaitoichi was a gambler so he and samurai were like dogs and cats.
There is new Zaitoichi series about blind girl musician, whom he taught how to fight with a short sword. She is searching for him. First movie was very good, but had wince making scenes. Men who grope her loose very important body part.
