basically it is a phone to dial an address(like earth) and it opens the Stargate, and allows you to travel to planets

The Stargate is a large diameter ring with symbols along its perimeter. The symbols have to be activated in a particular order to open the Stargate to a destination which is another Stargate on a different planet usually, although a Stargate can be located just about anywhere there is room for one. The Dial Home Device (DHD) is used to select the symbols in the order needed for the destination that you want to go to. There are the same symbols on the ring of the DHD that are on the Stargate. As you press the symbols on the DHD, the same symbols on the Stargate are activated. Once you have press the smybols corresponding to the address you want you then press the central large lighted button to activate the Stargate.

You then avoid being smashed by the vortex that is formed by opening the Stargate, wait for it to settle down so it looks like a puddle of water, step through the Stargate to get to the destination you have dialed up, and proceed to violate every directive ever conceived to deal with contact of off world civilizations in order to 1) Save one memeber of your team by putting the population of an entire planet, solar system, or in some cases other galaxy in jeopardy, 2) Show your inability to solve the simplest of puzzles until the last five minutes of the show, or 3) Eat up an hours worth of air time on a cable channel.

That is a neat looking DHD model. Would look good sitting on a desk.

You know what never makes any sense in Stargate? is how long the wormhole stays connected!
There seems to be no set time frame...

The Stargate instinctively? knows how long Jack O'Neil needs to stand next to it and yammer on before he decides to jump through
and how long it needs to stay connected while we wait for Teal'C to make it to the gate while fighting off the Go'a'uld!!
And then, once the Ta'ori have finished using the gate, it miraculously shuts down. Amazing.

That annoyed me for all the years that Stargate and Atlantis have been on TV!!

but I believe that was only when something was happening through the stargate...like sending a signal or some sort of weapon attack, etc...they could rely on the automatic time limit shutdown.

but when persons used the stargate for normal travel, nobody shuts it down...it just shuts down automatically once the last person has gone through.

how does it know how many people are going through?

and what about when it doesn't shut down because something is still supposed to happen? how does it know that? does it have a copy of the script in its memory banks?
