RAR is the format for a compressed file. Similar to ZIP.

You can download the program for free from: WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files
This will allow you to open/decompress the rar files.

Try This

You can try this free program that I use called 7-Zip. It will work on the .rar format as well as most of the popular compression formats.

7-Zip Link

Hope this helps

Cheers
Jim

Winrar

The great thing I've found with Winrar is that if you put your pointer over a Rar file (or a zip file for that matter) and right-click, you get an option to "extract here" or "extract to...", both of which options I use all the time. Really convenient. Use "extract here" if you think the rar or zip file contains its own folder, or "extract to..." if you aren't sure. I haven't found any restriction with the free version, either.

Of the two, I recommend 7zip. I see very little difference between 7zip and WinZip, other than the purchase price. Winrar is ok, but 7zip just "feels" better to me.

Just downladed Win Rar (again) and it still says "This is a trial version. Anyone may use it during a test period of 40 days. Following this test period or less, if you wish to continue to use WinRAR, you must purchase a license.". I am puzzled.

I use JustZIPit for Zip files and Alzip for all other compression formats
Both are Free. And Alzip will let you Pick where to open/de-compress the file.
From Altools, I also use their Alsong for my music player, and alshow for my prrimary vidio player

ALTools PC Utilities-zip/unzip,ftp,movies, music, pictures, login manager, internet helper

Free Backup Software - JustZIPit Details

JustZIPit is a Very Small file, and very easy to use.

Another 7zip user here.
I highly recommend it! It's free and works perfectly on RAR files and a whole other set of formats like ZIP, GZ, TAR, etc.
