South African Filling Station

I was leeching some colour pictures of RAF aircraft from the Internet just now, and came across this little model:

Caltexdal Buildings. | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Cheers,

Seems that those two buildings have been part of a much bigger presentation. Look at the pic and you can spot the filling station and the post office on the left. It might have been a collectible series offered by petrol station brand Caltex - go figure. Would be nice if all those models could be found.

This is what the author wrote about the picture,

"In 1958 Caltex ran a competition for the construction of a model village called Caltexdal.Printed sheets of the buildings that had to be assembled were collected weekly from your dealership. The items consisted of a church, station, garage etc. You were required to assemble and do a layout of your town with roads, gardens and anything else you could think of."

That is him in the picture when he was 14 years old, he did win the competition.

Hi guys,

Glad you are enjoying this.
As a matter of fact I am still in posession of about five of those printed sheets.
If that series can be reprinted today I am sure it wil be a very good seller

Cheers,

Etienne.

Hi Etienne and wellcome aboard. That's a very nice village you created back then, no wonder you won the competition. I agree, those are appetising models. Caltex is still in business isn't it? Should someone ask if they could let them out for the paper modeling audience? Thanks for the new pics too.

Welcome aboard, and thank you for all the wonderful pictures you have been posting online (I found your album whilst researching colour schemes for the Lad'n'Dad C-Class flying boat), especially the Caltexdal stuff!

Cheers,

Mike

Very nice find Mike. I have contacted Caltex through their website about this model. We'll see if I get any response. Coincidentally they are running a weekly trivia contest about Caltex history. It would be pretty funny if now a question about this model shows up.
