San Salvador Galleon
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is building a full-sized replica of the "San Salvador", the galleon in which Cabrillo explored California. They are offering a paper model of the vessel on their site:

Looks like a really detailed ship; noticed that the museum has a "pirate collection" Hopefully parrot wielding pirates and not scanner pirates bailey

My friend, David Okamura, is working on this model for the museum, and I saw his early beta build a couple of months ago. We agreed that it won't be one for beginners, and couldn't believe the museum was going to give it away for free. I too, can't wait to get my own copy.

That is amazing. I didn't see how large of a model this is ... either dimensionally or number of pages. But it looks beyond my meager abilities ...

I have seen this model couple of months ago, as PDMcool pointed out David Okamura (PDMCool and I hang around some good people) is building the prototype. The model is designed by the master paper model designer Roman Detyna / Digital Navy. The quality of the kit is very high. The basic model is well within the capability of a new to the hobby modeler but the masts, yards and rigging could require the skills of a more experienced modeler. But don't let my opinion stop you from building it. The model is well worth the effort.

Has anyone been able to download the San Salvador yet? As of 1700 EST on Christmas Day, I'm still getting a "link not available" message when I try.
I was very glad to hear that Roman Detnya and David Okamura were involved in the creation and prototyping of this model -- that means that it's sure to be a top-notch product. This is actually the second time that the MMSD has ventured into the paper model world. For a while they were offering a simple model of their bark "Star of India." The model is still available from the Synergy Icons site, Star of India but I don't think it's worth the $9.95 that they're charging for it. Peter A. |
