Vought Flying Pancake
 

I was unaware that one even existed. It's been restored. Is there a really good paper model available?

OK, oddball Question: If one of the prop-jobs survived, what happened to the jet-job versions?
As far as I knew, (or likely, anyone else, knew, for that matter) all of the flying pancakes had been either museumed or scrapped.
I have to confess Maj. Charles my friend, this item has confused me a bit.

As far as I know, there was only ever one XF5-U protype ever made and that was damaged while being trucked to Muroc for it's first flight - WW2 being over by then, there was not felt a big need to continue with the design.

The jet versions never progressed beyond paper designs.

As above, I think that the ModelArt one is the only paper model of any of the pancakes...

You must mean the turbine powered version. Beats me. Maybe the Smithsonian has one of those in storage, too. That's where this one came from.

This is the only example of this plane left . the Xf5-u was powered by radial engines in it's fuselage . I read that it was ground run and taxi tested but never left the ground . The USAF ordered it scraped and the took a wrecking ball to it . I guess it was strong because it took alot of drops from the ball to get it to break

I'd thought my memory must have been badly slipping a cog or two.

Yes, I did mean the turbine-powered (extended-drive turboprop?) version when I wrote "jet-job".

I had also at some stage thought I'd seen film of the tubroprop version in flight, but now am thinking I must have been mistaken.

It's the jet job that Billy was noting when he posted the url. It appears to be a fairly decent model. I've never built any that designer's models, so I can't comment authoritatively.
