Didnt they do this in the second world war? I remember a story of some bombers who were training with cardboard bombs, and they spotted some tanks in Egypt and decided to frighten the enemy, only to discover later the tanks were decoys!

They used wooden and inflatable tanks/trucks etc. before D-day. The allies put them up on the cliffs and near the shores to fool the Germans in to thinking they were attacking a different area

Some just painted silhouettes on the ground so that you would assume good camouflage and bomb the near invisible planes.

To Fool a Glass Eye is a neat look at camouflage and use of dummy aircraft, tanks and even complete airfields. Also an attempt to 'move' Hamburg a quarter mile to the left
