Moving Antique Japanese Ghost Story Paper Model
???????????????
No 53 is a scene from Kabuki play. There is lots of action when tatebanko is assembled. A samurai changes position and burning bloody lantern (flip sheets) and scary vengeful woman demon ghost (turning wheel). A tatebanko with other scenes from this play has already been posted, but is given here again: ??????????????? If you hunt around the links on this site there are prints showing other scenes of the play.If you find any other paper models on this site please post the links. |

Maybe it's late, or maybe the long weekend, but I get very confused on how these go together. Has anyone here built them?

I have not built it yet, but can give some hints.
The round wheel goes in back of main panel and is held in place by a pin, that lets the wheel rotate, The ghost and wisps rotate in and out of the cut out windows in the main panel. The smaller pieces with the above and below the waist parts of the man are probably glued back to back and then glued as a flip up panel to the white area on the big piece: the man reacts to the ghost sighting, and changes position when you flip the panel up and down. On other tatebank with action parts, there might instead be a slot, which lets the animated panel slide in and out of the scene. The large tatebanko referred to in the second URL of my first posting has a similar animation, it has bush spirits on a flip panel in the garden attached to one of the houses. This is too many words where a single picture would have done the job better, sorry, but I hope this lets you see how to put it together. |

That's why they say "A picture is worth a thousand words" (unless it's a picture of a mime).
