Has anyone checked into this online software for papercraft
Has anyone checked into this online software for papercraft. It turns photos of objects into 3D models. I wonder if you could shoot photos of a toy figure, turn it into a 3D model, and then make a paper model of it.

a digital 3D model is not the same thing as a 3D paper model
This is the idea of creating a 2D image that can be manipulated on the screen to allow you to see "around" it. As if you had created a 3D object in a modeling program. By taking multiple photogrpahs from many angles, the 3D creation software can extrapolate a 3d view of the object in the photos and display it to you with a dynamic interface that allows you to move and rotate the object image. Taking this a step further for "unfolding", to create 2D parts that can be assembled back into a 3D object, is not difficult. This is where 3D "surface mesh" comes into play. Thats how a 3D object is created in a video game for example. But this software doesn't do that. It does however allow you to record spatial coordinates that a 3D printer can use to print out a solid 3D object from the modeled object.

I tried it out a couple of months ago. The potential is there, but I'm not impressed so far. It took more than a dozen pictures from various angles to recreate a coffee mug, and even then there was alot missing from the mesh. I also tried to use it to make models of buildings based on input from ESRI, Google Maps and Bing and it never could come up with anything.
But it couldn't hurt to try, it might just be that the things I wanted to do were tasks it wasn't any good at. |
