Information
hi,
a little thread-necromancy... Papermau in his blog has just post an article titled "Ancient Bath House In Japan - by Live Journal - via Paper Modelers" but the links, in the original site, to the high definition images are lost. I searched for them, but no results, even Wayback Machine was unuseful. So I landed here, and I would know if someone has some indications on how to find those images. Thanks |

Missing Bath House Files
I did a quick search for the files and could not find anything on the internet except pictures of the completed model.
I was able to find my copies of the images in a stack of CDs. I will try to upload the files to the downloads section here. The images should be long out of copyright, the artist, wood carvers and publisher all passed away more than 70 years ago. |

Shinpan kumiage toro yuya shinmise no zu (A Set of Five Cut-out Pictures of a Newly Rebuilt Bathhouse) by Hokusai Oban, woodblock 5 pieces/25.1 x 37.7cm each ca. 1807-1812 I uploaded the files to the Download section and am posting thumbnails here. The images show 2 centuries worth of colour fading, but they can be brightened up using a photo editing programme. I recommend printing the files on stiff self supporting paper. The original oban size prints were larger than the paper sizes we usually use. Printing on legal size paper makes a convenient sized completed model. Hokusai, the wood block carvers and the original publisher all passed away more than 70 years ago, so there should be no copyright limitations to printing the tatebanko. This tatebanko would make an interesting companion to the French private house that "pilpat" posted (a special house model !). (Hokusai also designed a tatebanko of a Kabuki theater with outside street scene and the interior showing the stage and audience. I have not been able to find any images of the prints.) |

PAPERMAU: Sento - Japanese Bath House - by 222.Co - Casa De Banho Japonesa
There are links to another bath house, this one from the 1920's at Papermau. The original site is no longer up, but the simple model of the bath house has been saved by the Internet Wayback Machine. |

Not paper models, they are freebie booklets about Japanese printmakers.

Thanks again,
the three booklets are interesting too. A question, I don't see the images among the dowlands, but clicking on the thumbnails it bring me to some images 1182x768, are those the right ones? They are anyway much, much better than the previous I found Thanks |

My upload is either pending moderation or it failed. The pictures above are the same resolution as the ones I put in the downloads sections.

It took me an embarrassing number of tries, but I finally managed to upload the bath house paper model.
The men's section of the bathhouse is decorated with very ornate carvings and the men have a view of a beautiful garden from their side of the bathhouse. The men also have access to the second floor where they can relax and cool down after their bath, sip tea and eat tasty snacks and maybe get a massage. The women's half of the bathhouse has a shelf or drawer on the back wall, where mothers could stash their small children. Look closely at the print and you can see one baby about to escape from the kid box. |
