What is that!
Doing research on 1800's train at work this morning and came across couple very nice locomotive. Maybe somebody know something about them and maybe even want to build them too. enjoy.

I've always thought these steam era inspection engines had their own kind of beauty. Most every large main carrier line in the US had them and some were quite ornate. Here's a few more;
I know there are some good illustration s of the last one, the STAR (my favorite), floating around on the internet; I'd love to see one of these as a kit! |

Yes, these unusual trains are beautiful in their strangeness.
I saw pictures of some variations years ago at a museum in Vermont.

Good grief.
I am a railway buff and I love American trains, but I never even knew these existed. Really nice! A new line of research for me!

That was a new one for me, those things are impressive. They would make great models.

Count me in for wanting to see these brought to modeling life, as well. Those would make wonderful little gems.

There really were quite a number of these in the days. Some did double duty as paymasters cars and they ran the gamut from very large mainline engines to quite small, narrow gauge locos built in the RR shops. One of the most loved is this one, the Emelia;

Those are neat looking.
I saw what looked like a self-propelled passenger car going down the tracks a couple of weeks ago that reminds me of those inspection engines. It looked to be a diesel electric. I had never seen anything like that before. There was some sort of graphic on the side. Apparantly it was on some kind of tour to promote some cause or event.

According to sources I have seen, these were inspection engines, used by the superintendent and his staff to inspect the rails and right of way. They would have pulled light maintenance-of-way (MOW) trains. Sitting over the boiler as they did, they would hardly have been a comfortable ride, especially in warm weather.
