My late father drove a jeep in WWII, his unit, the 542nd Topographical Engineers, made maps from aerial photographs and B company , which Dad was assigned to deliverred them. Which is why he absolutely HATED General Patton! Seems the good General moved too fast! His outfit would bust their backsides and drive all night to get maps to Third army, only to be told to back up to the incinerator as the Third Army had already gone through the area and didn't need the maps no more! Me, I think it shws tha Patton knew very well what he has about, to paraphrase a certain British generals comments about the American Colonials! Carried a Thompson all through the War, still had the same 90 rounds for it he startesd out with, though he was in Belguim at the time of the Battle of the Bulge, figured he'd be better off leaving any German soldier that suddenly appeared lying in the road with a set of GI tire tracks on him rather than stopping and getting the old Chicago Typewriter out!
