Profile Planes patterns

OK, it's not exactly card modelling (though the patterns are for printing on card) but I've done these plans for balsa catapult gliders, and they're offered free on our card modelling site - Scale Model Scenery.

They're all great flyers, and with the addition of trim tabs on the wings and tailplane, (see the Phantom photo) they can be adjusted for some superb flights! All are made from 1/8th and 1/16th inch balsa.

Go to "Shop/Free stuff" -
You can, of course browse through the rest of our models that are for sale(!)

I did that exact same thing back in 2001/2002, using a 3 view. You can make a B-52
that flies pretty well believe it or not!

Very nice set of models. I've been making up a few foam models to giveaway or sell cheap at our Oakley farmers market.

Looks like the Hawker Hunter got replaced by the Arrow. Both are very nice models though.

Great downloads. I remember hours spent flying the balsa gliders when I was a kid. I never used a catapult, though. How does one go about making one?

Thanks,
John

Yep - it turned out that the Arrow wasn't a good flyer for some reason, so I withdrew it. The others are all good, though - went out last night with my grandson and had a great time catapulting them all over the park. The Vampire glides well but needs some careful trimming with aileron tabs for stable flight. The Sabre and MiG-15 are excellent aerobatic flyers, and the Hunter and the Phantom are great for getting really long, flat glides, when trimmed properly.

This is how I would create a handheld catapult for paper or balsa gliders

Take two tongue depressors, ask your Doc, or buy a bag of them at the local craft store.
some rubber bands
a drill, with a small drill bit 1/4 or there abouts should be good
Duct tape or cloth gaffer tape

All the gathered parts(first picture)

taping up the depressors(second picture)

hole drilled, and rubber band pulled through the hole, and flipped one end over the other to secure it to the depressors.

(if you must know, yes the drill cracked both depressors, hence the tape at the top of the sticks)

Hope this helps someone

Rick

Thanks, Rick. I am going to make one up this afternoon. Very clever idea.

I had a lot of fun flying these models in the 1950's.
There is no reason why they could not be printed on cardstock and fly again.

The balsa silhouette models and the reproductions of the Top Flite Jigtime models sure brought back memories. A fellow named Ron Anderson has also made the Monogram Speedee-built airplanes available again: http://felixdk.websitetoolbox.com/file?id=981517.
