Forceps

I've had a pair of medical forceps in my bathroom cabinet for many years. I can't for the life of me remember where I got them from, but they were ideal for removing splinters, etc.

Since starting paper modelling I have found them indispensable as a third hand, and have often thought it would be nice to have a couple more to hand, but such things are rather expensive, I thought.

So when I tripped over these Forceps & Tongs | CPC | Results I instantly ordered two of each.

They are a little bigger than the one I've been using, but if anything it makes them even more useful.

Johnny.

Those are very handy to have. The one I have is very long, 12.5 inches/32 cm, and has serrated jaws that I have to modify so they won't leave unsightly corrugations in the card stock where they are clamping.

I wrap a small piece if Blue painters tape around the very tip of mine to prevent the serrated jaws from crimping my card stock. Works great.

The medical world calls them hemostats (Blood stoppers). They can have teeth (the better to grip arteries with) or have smooth jaws (the better to grip paper model bits). They do not have to be expensive - I found some for $3.50. Search Amazon on "hemostat smooth" and see what comes up.

I was wandering through a Harbor Freight store a few years back and saw those things I described hanging around. For a couple of bucks they could not be ignored. Great for reaching into long voids to hold stuff. The part of the jaws that actually do the holding is around 3.50 inches/9 cm long.

Army/Navy Stores have them as do model train stores. I bought a handful at a train show several years ago.

I bought a pack of 10 of these on E-bay for $6. They come with a variety of different tips, and although they are sold as disposable they are very long lasting. Just search for disposable forceps, apparently they are normally used in body piercing. I got the slotted triangle ones with no teeth.
