The paper model figures represent Yokai, fearsome creatures which infest Japan and bring trouble to travelers, unsuspecting virgins, and to both the virtuous and the wicked.
I had not realized what a dangerous place Japan was, how easy it is to stumble upon and annoy a Yokai and doom yourself to a horrible fate. This very useful book describes the different kinds of Yokai lurking in Japan's dark corners, and more importantly how to defend yourself from a Yokai attack. Everyone planning a trip to Japan needs to read it.
