Interesting! Unusual in being a 'one cup' design. How was the speed read from it?

ehm...
Never tested. Calibration is quite difficult... and do not forget that it is a paper model.

Well, after seeing your video, I see how it was supposed to work (the item on top is a weathering vane to show direction...I thought it had a 'cup' to spin for the speed measurement.) However, I would think it would work best when aligned directly into the wind (or perpendicular to it?)

Great model.

The speed indicator on a Tiger Moth is not a lot different.

I'll have to go back. I missed the video. This is really a gorgeous piece.

Exactly! Good example. Though, an essential difference is that the "wind" on the Moth is always from one direction. The use of a spring also makes it more consistent regardless of "G-loading", whereas Leonardo's design depends solely on gravity to work. Obviously, for stationary installations only...

I think a working instrument could be made by simply mounting it onto a pivot table, marked with a direction scale, and change the 'direction vane' into a fixed weather vane so it would orient the speed 'flap' directly into the wind. It should also have some 'drag' in the pivot table movement to dampen out wind direction variation a bit, else it might interfere with the speed "read-out" - or else make the vane's connection flexible to absorb excess oscillations.

Dang, that went off track quickly, didn't it!

I would never want to second guess the great Leonardo but I think the idea is that the vane on top shows wind direction then you simply rotate the base to align it with the vane. The circular object on the vane I suspect is a weight which will damp any small oscillations in wind direction.

Yes Karl!
I do not know the real size of the anemometer, as thought by Leonardo, but I do not exlude that it could be small, manageable manually, like a portable anemometer.
