I thought this Akita looked somehow familiar, so I checked. Canon has an almost identical dog, but it calls it a Shiba. I get to wonder what the difference is? Whatever, Canon do also list an Akita, but I think their one is a puppy.

I had a Google and Wikipedia enlightened me ... Very similar beasts, but like the Husky/Malamute comparison ... size is the giveaway.

Transit paper models
Ueda city is offering paper models of trolleys that can be adapted to use on a model railroad. They range from semi real to cute and cartoonish.
I found two pages with paper models offered by Ueda city: Ueda city transit models http://www.city.ueda.nagano.jp/besshosen/besshosen/index.html http://www.city.ueda.nagano.jp/besshosen/marumadokun/index.html If you find more pages please post them. Here is a picture of very serious looking Ueda city guides about to begin their challenging work day at the transit station: http://www.city.ueda.nagano.jp/besshosen/images/dscn7927.jpg I found pictures of a model train, they are nice to look at even if they are plastic http://www.city.ueda.nagano.jp/ipro/besshosen/mokei/06.html Yes, there are more paper models scattered around the web site. Here is a track maintenance train http://www.city.ueda.nagano.jp/ipro/besshosen/marumadokun/06.html A Youtube video about what you can see and do if you use Ueda City rail transit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q6txvKO89w&feature=youtu.be Last edited by rickstef; 02-18-2019 at 10:00 PM. |

Thanks very much for the Shout out on the tatebanko article in Painter's journal. Tony Coles deserves almost all of the credit - he figured out how to build these, and found the association with the principles of Kabuki theater set design. We are working on yet another publications, but these . things . take . time.
All the best.

I had guessed that the base of some tatebanko had to be tilted in order to make them look right, but I was still not entirely sure if I was really doing it right, until I saw the translation you and Tony had done, which was a nice confirmation of my guess. Next build, though, I will try to get the eye levels to line up. I had asked a Japanese pen-friend if she could read the explanation on an early 19th c. tatebanko that I had mailed to her and she replied that it was in an old style cursive script, and she and her friends could only guess at the meaning. My friend also told me that writing Kanji is becoming a lost art, younger Japanese now "write" Kanji with their iPads or computers, using Romaji or kana to call up a menu of brush strokes or Kanji to choose from. Did you or Tony read grass script or did you all have to ask for help? PS I am still looking for a full size high resolution copy of the Kabuki theatre tatebanko.
