19th c. Ueno Park Zoo
An 1891 tatebanko of the recently opened Western style zoo in Ueno Park.
This is a fantastic tatebanko showing the intersection of newly introduced Western ideas and traditional Japan. The paper sushi are like the plastic sushi in restaurant windows, I once visited a restaurant supply store that had many shelves of plastic food. It was strange and overwhelming. |

Build it by printing page three and trimming or cropping to the margins of the tatebanko print image. |

Was that in Kappabashi-dori in Tokyo? When I was there, the plastic food retailers tended to be a little snippy with tourists who aren't serious buyers. We did get some gorgeous knives though.

Thanks so much for the continued explorations into the world of tatebanko, John. Might we guess that there is growing interest in these dioramas inside Japan? Like most paper models, they are pre-adapted to this Internet age.

Adapted from the description at Fuji Arts website: This model depicts a scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three samurai triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry), who can be identified by their boldly patterned kimono. The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. This set shows the scene where Sakuramaru and Umeomaru confronting the evil Shihei in his royal cart outside a temple with Matsumomaru guarding him.
