Gothic Cathedral

I was looking for the Albi cathedral, to see if a paper model of it had ever been published.
I did not find one, but came across this model of a typical Gothic Cathedral. I don't think that it has ever been posted here, but I offer apologies if this is a repeat post.

Maquette de cathédrale gothique en carton

I did find an article about the restoration of the duplex solar clocks on the walls of " Basilique Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi".
Cadran solaire du Tarn : Albi – Cath

I wanted a model of the Albi Cathedral because it is such a unique building.
It is the largest brick building in the world; it was designed to project overwhelming power, and convince the beholder of his/her insignificance.
The lower walls of the cathedral are contoured like a castle or fortress.

The small door in the massive entryway imparts the threat of being crushed when you go into the cathedral.
Inside the cathedral was a huge fresco of the Last Judgement to impress upon the Albigensian heretics the eternal terrors that awaited them if they did not change their ways.

I translated some valuable advice on the download page intended for young paper modelers :

Il ne faut jamais couper en direction d'un membre, par exemple la main qui tient le papier !
Il ne faut pas pousser le cutter non plus.

"Never cut towards a body part, for example, the hand holding the paper!"
"Do not push the cutter, either."

John: I've been to Albi many times. My wife and I and another couple used to lead groups of students around that area of France off and on for 10 years. The Cathedral is truly imposing and would make a great paper model. As would another, the Cathedral of St. Foi in Conques which is famous for its tympanum.

Both have bracing depictions of Hell.

I found a kit of Albi when we visited it was one of the postcard size kits.

I think it was in the Cathedral shop..... I checked Instant Durable and unfortunately it's not one of theirs ;-(((

Not much help I'm afraid ..... unless someone is going there and is willing to send you the card..

Cheers
Mike

Mike, thanks not much chance of my actually visiting the cathedral gift store, but knowing that a model actually exists means I might be able to track down a copy somewhere.
(I suspect that the Flemish Bosch-like vision of hell painted over the altar was very disturbing to the Albigensians who probably had never seen anything like it before.)
The Albi Cathedral reminds me of some of the granite faced reconstruction era county courthouses that I have seen, which were also approached by a narrow street opening onto a square, they were designed to let you know who was boss.

Have you noticed how the outside walls get wider at the base?

Although Catholics, they practised a slightly different version so had to fortify the building.

The slaughter of the Albigensians was the churches first "crusade" against their own people

Good luck with your search - I'm afraid you may be disappointed with the kit.

Cheers

Mike

The carvings have an almost 8th-9th Century Hindu feel to them.
