Good evening Rick,

thank you for posting the link to Amazon.
Having gone trough the intitial link in detail, I found that
ZUPAGRAFIKA is running it's own shop ... and there are MORE
cardmodel related items than "Brutal London" and "...behind the iron curtain".
I feel free to post that link also: Zupagrafika

have a nice weekend ...

Thomas, last month I saw information somewhere about the Brutal Models. I did not find this thread until yesterday when I was going to write about my find. So I will just add to what you have written. I ordered the Brutal London book from Amazon, which I received yesterday. I found this book very interesting with a lot of information about this style of buildings in Europe. I made the first model, the Alexander Rd., Estates – shown below.

When we were in Poland this past June, we saw a lot of these buildings, particularly in Warsaw. I think I will order several more editions. They are very simple to make and are a definite contrast with the usual Gothic church models that I make.

Is there a way to copy this thread to Architectural Models thread? I think there may be a number of architectural modelers who missed this posting as I did.

I don't get it-what's so controversial or brutal about those buildings? This is the kind of thing one builds when money/technology is in very short supply and worker skills are non existent or questionable.

Is it simply offensive to look at(as in aesthetics)?

Brutalist is an architectural style, buildings tend to be monochromatic, lots of concrete on the outside, making for a dense looking structure

And some of them are actually Brutal. My wife, an architect, went to school in a Brutalist icon designed by Paul Rudolf, the Yale School of Art and Architecture building. Rudolf was Dean of the school when he designed it. Not bad now that it has been renovated, but "as built" it was horrible. Just to get in you had to climb up 20 steps in an open entry corridor that often felt like walking in a windtunnel. The bathrooms were in a separate unheated tower, so very very cold in the winter. The windows in the building could not be opened, but there was no air conditioning, so it all got very hot in the summer. The internal spaces were raw concrete echo chambers, so every noise was amplified and heard throughout the floor. Pigeons died in the ventilation air shafts and could not be removed, thought they could be smelled. The absence of attention to actual human beings was striking. What better object lesson to architecture students than to be forced to work and study in inhuman architecture for three years - they would never make those mistakes!
