Samrat Yantra sundial

Here's an unusual one, it's a card model of a giant sundial, built on an architectural scale, in New Delhi, India. The original was built in the early 1700's as part of the Jantar Mantar Royal Observatory. The gnomon that casts the shadow is some 70 feet high, so a high precision of timekeeping is possible, theoretically to some 2 seconds.

Paper Models | Jantar Mantar

The instructions provide a useful section on using the model as a sundial, with the necessary adjustments for latitude.
A fascinating historic observatory, some of the other instruments are amazing to look at.

Thanks a lot for sharing this unusual but interesting project with us

The kit looks great with nice textures, and the instructions are very detailed.

A fine work!

Cool looking, but already have too many cool looking things. Now I need to build a few of them.

Yes, I know what you mean. It's a constant challenge getting time to build all these great things, each one generally takes me months or even years to get to completion. I think I started my first model, a Voyager probe, in 2012 and still awaits completion. Although I have finished quite a few others in the meantime!

Very interesting and impressive site. Graphics and presentation, excellent. I hope we see more of this. The design and accuracy required is amazing. A sundial accurate to 2 seconds.

Yes, I was very impressed by the website, Doug. Lots of research and useful information on there. The Solar Nexus PDF in the library section has some amazing photographs of the prototypes, they truly are amazing things. Julian
