Rick,

It turns out that a maiko is an apprentice geisha.

I learned about geisha from the book 'Memorirs of Geisha' that I bought at audible.com. In the story apprentice geisha Chiyo-chan finally became a full-fledged geisha Sayuri-san. Having read the book I had fancy of walking out with a geishaI but I live in a different world.
Building this nice kit will realise my dream

There is a section of Kyōto called the Gion that has retained its traditional (late 19th century) appearance of wooden buildings and red lanterns, where maiko train as geisha. In the evening, they can be seen on their way to performance engagements. It's all rather artificial, but it still has an aura of romance. And I can remember that in 1962 it was especially evocative for a young Army second lieutenant who had studied Japanese and had a fascination with the country.

2nd link, there's the set of pictures, a bunch of text and then it says 'download' with a link to another page - click on it and there's a 'download' button.
