Paper Models of 1956 Antarct Expedition
At Papermau there is a link to a model of the Taylorcraft Auster that was flown during the 1956 Trans Antarctic Expedition:
PAPERMAU: Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition`s Taylorcraft Auster Antarctic Paper Model - by Paper Diorama The model was created by Paperdiorama.com The expedition also used a Tucker SnoCat and there is a paper model of that as well. It was discussed on this forum: Tucker Sno-Cat Commonwealth Trans - Antarctic Expedition 1957 The download link for the Tucker SnoCat is posted in the thread above or can be accessed directly from here Build a paper model of a Tucker Sno Cat - Forums Forums - Off Topic Forum FUN If you want a Tucker SnoCat of your own, to go with the model you can contact the manufacturer and arrange for one to be delivered to you Tucker Sno-Cat® Corporation - Home For a company history and where antique Tucker SnoCats are on display: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucker_Sno-Cat (A properly scaled model of the Tucker snocat could be displayed next to the Taylorcraft Auster model.) |

Thanks for posting this. I like wingy thingies. I just wish that I could enlarge the model to 1/48 scale.

Nice finds, John.
Zio Prudenziati used to offer a rather nice 1/72 (or so) Auster Taylorcraft Mk.6 Antarctic serial ZP 567 similar to Serial WE 600 offered by Paperdiorama. Don |

That's the one! I've built a couple over the years and have one about half finished (it's been half-finished for about ten years).
Looks like some good diorama potential. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common...tic_Expedition Incicentally, I'm not sure how many Auster Antarctics there were. According to Wiki, "Two ski fitted RAAF Auster AOP.6 (A11-200 & A11-201) were based at Mawson Station from 1952. On 5 March 1954, A11-200 was lost over the side of a ship." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctic_Flight_RAAF My guess is that Zio's model (ZP 567) is of one of the 1952 RAAF birds. This source (https://www.skytamer.com/Auster_AOP_Mk.6.html) says, "In 1955 two T.7 aircraft were modified for use on the 1956 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, being designated Auster Antarctic (Auster Model C4). The aircraft had extra radio equipment, larger tail surfaces, the ability to be fitted with floats or skis as required and a bright orange finish to aid visibility. The aircraft was replaced with the Auster AOP.9 from 1955 and surplus aircraft were converted to civilian use, first as the Auster 6A and later as the Beagle A.61 Terrier." One of these aircraft (WE563/NZ1701) is on display at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Christchurch. https://www.airforcemuseum.co.nz/aircraft/auster-mk-7c/ WE600 (the Paperdiorama model and, presumably, the other 1956 bird) is at RAF Museum Cosford: http://allatsea.co.za/blog/wp-conten...osford-410.jpg I hope that someone (are you guarding this push CharlieC?) will have the pukka gen on how many Auster Antarctics there were and how they were marked. Don Added later: While I was researching and writing this post, some ethereal and icy-sounding music was playing on the radio. I just discovered that it was Ralph Vaugh Williams's Sinfonia Antarctica, based on his score for the 1948 film "Scott of the Antarctic," played by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. How's that for a coincidence! Last edited by Don Boose; 01-17-2018 at 01:03 PM. |

For the one referenced at the Vista Steam Museum I shot some photos a few years ago. Guess its same base model, but side window arrangement different and a different rear door.

Hi John,
Thanks for the model and info. I think I missed something though. Going to the direct link for the model it mentioned 4 PDF files, 3 parts & 1 instruction, but I only see 2 PDFs, no instructions. Did I miss it? |
