I didn't mean to start an argument...and I sure didn't mean to insult anyone (that was just a bonus)...

but seriously, yes I think its extremely silly that circles and arcs are published as angular shapes and not smoothed out.
To me, its nothing more than pure laziness.

This "designer" reached a point where they didn't pay any more attention,
or just didn't care to do any more work.
"Thats good enough...I am done".

No, I'm not perfect...never ever said I was...but I do say that I put a lot of effort into all my designs
and I will always try to tweak things to the limit of my skills (if I can).

Yes, I already have a bad taste about those who use pepakura and other shortcuts to manufacture incomplete or substandard models, and then claim to be "designers".
Yes, this influences how I look at a lot of models.
But in this case, I am just looking at a simple circular part and asking why the designer could not have taken the time to fix it...

There are a dozen ways to draw a smooth circle that don't require expensive software.
By the way...Pepakura designer costs $38...not free...
unless you are one of the myriad of "designers" using it with a crack or pirated key.

I published a small UFO model very similar to this one...and mine has round circles.
If I can do it, any idiot can! lol

As a designer and a modeller, I have the right to comment and criticize a model whether it be free or not, simple or complicated.
If the model was intended to be angular or faceted, I wouldn't have commented.

This isn't the first (and won't be the last) "lazy designer".
Maybe my comment will inspire them to do better next time or fix this model, or learn a new skill.
I can promise you, if all they get is "nice" "well done" "good job", then nothing will ever improve.

Laziness is a lot easier than effort.

Dave - I don't quite understand why all of a sudden it appears you cannot make comments!

I agree 100% with what Ruben said - and it is relatively easy for a designer to freehand circles.

Foute Man - very interesting article indeed about the saucer origins. It seems spot on in terms of the explanation.

Thank you very much for this.

Was there any further follow-up? The author says he is working on it...

I'll admit my ignorance when it comes to UFO claims over the years...

is this really a photograph of a suspected "alien spacecraft"?
Seriously?

The upper vent holes (to let out heat)
and the eyelet (for hanging the lampshade)
don't give it away?

No they don't Dave! Or apparently they didn't back in the day.

The photos are from George Adamski's book "Flying Saucers Have Landed" and they really started up the flying saucer stuff in earnest.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Adamski

All very believable at the time. The photos helped result in popularization of the saucer shape. Had he used a shoebox instead, no doubt there would be blocks from space zooming through the sky......

Seeing as how NOBODY has actually EVER seemed to capture an UNIDENTIFIED (I wonder why they call it that?) Flying Object, how would you have any clue AT ALL about the shape of said subject? hmmm? Maybe they are all voxel manufactured and you cannot prove me wrong.

Of course you cannot "capture" a UFO...
since, once it is captured, it is identified (as whatever it is).

Unless you captured it in a large box, and then it remains unseen and unidentified.

But...did you really capture anything?

Kind of like Schrodinger's Cat...is it alien? or is it a cat?

I say...of course its alien...its a cat!

Commenting is commenting is not the same as rubbishing but that's just my quaint way of looking at it.
Since there's been repetition let me repeat myself.
"What is it with designers who don't realise some other designers can only manage with/afford pepakura and that some builders are happy with the results."
(and did anyone say pepa was free?)
Draw conical developments by hand - how do you texture them?
Have any of you even tried explaining to people how to develop by hand - how did it compare to bashing your head against a brick wall - don't bother to tell me I have tried here and elsewhere.
People who design in pepa are a separate group - they have their audience - they may or may not choose to move on to working in other formats.
Incidentally the chap who produced pepa is a university professor with several learned and sophisticated papers to his credit about how to unfold organic 3D meshes.
From what I've seen of his work he pays no attention to conventional development techniques using Euclidean geometry and leaves me wondering if he is even aware of them.

We always know when you're flummoxed Dave.
You post nonsense to obfuscate.
Cheers

As if it was free.

And unfortunately it is free to to many,
since many of these "designers" are using cracked versions or pirated keys.

The implication is that I use Corel...its expensive...others can't afford what I use to design.
What about GIMP?...it does everything Corel can do...and FOR FREE.
GIMP is a FREE vector based software.
No reason why you can't design in vector based software now.

Pepakura converts. It converts 3D patterns and models into flat 2D templates for paper models.
There really is no design involved.
This UFO was probably designed using some sort of CAD software.
Have you priced CAD software? Unless you are using free pirated software, the cost argument is irrelevant.
Exported CAD files need to be cleaned up in a vector based software...turn those polygons into circles and curves!
Thats the argument I am making.

And FYI...I design in my head...I DO NOT use my software to design at all.
and I do not use 3D CAD design software.
I use a lot of math and imagination.
If you don't know math, I guess you should have paid more attention in school.

If you didn't get to go to school...I apologize.

Only reason not to use is GIMP is laziness....you don't want to learn the software.
Only reason to leave a circular UFO model as a multi sided polygon...is laziness.

You are right...I am coming very close to bashing the designer, as opposed to criticising constructively.
My apologies.
My issue is with the publication of an unfinished model...in my opinion it is unfinished.
The round/circular UFO should be round/circular shape...not a "stop sign".
And I think it would have taken very little effort to have completed it that way.

But my original comment wasn't actually pointed directly at this designer and his UFO model.
It reflected my opinion of many models out there that are unfinished in this way.
And my original comment was directed at all so called "designers" who don't clean up their CAD files!
