In 1966, while being assigned to satellite research and development in the USAF, I had one of the earliest IBM table top computers (this was cutting edge). It consisted of three clam shell type card readers, a hard wired black box and an electric typewriter. You would enter your data on the punch cards, by hand punching the cards with a stylex and place one card in each clamshell. Then close the clamshell readers and hit the read button on the black box. When the box indicated that it had read the data, you would open the 3 card readers and repeat the actions, until all your data was input to the black box. Then you would hit the compute button on the the box and wait. When the computer had finished it's computations, the electric typewriter would turn on and printout the results. It was a great contract negotiation tool, because the contractors didn't have one.
