Hi all,

I found this image over on tumblr, on one of the many car related blogs, I did some further looking, and found a better scan
This site has the better scan, go down to the September 2 entries
chico moto: 2010-08-29

This image is bit smushed in the fold line and one of the tire backs
Stiffspeed : Photo

I am still working on getting the issue of the magazine, this model was originally shared

Very cool Rick! I was wondering what my next project could be in the last few weeks and tought of (among other things) some hot rod models based on Dave Bell's cartoonish-black-&-white-ink-pen style. Now I can see how cool it would be!

Or you could make an old man happy with some step down Hudsons ... like you sorta half promised a "one day maybe" afor you disappeared to college.

Luvin' the lil' Chico van too Rick. That'll give me a colouring in excercise afor building it too. Should look good among Dave's Koolwheelz Rods that I'm also workin' on. They'll all be drastically shrunk down though.

I have done some more digging on this model.

It was published in the August 1976 issue of Hot Rod Magazine, and drawn by Thomas Warkentin(who also drew for Heavy Metal, and the Star Trek Newspaper Comic Strip)

It seems that in certain issues during that year, the Van issues, they released some interesting extras, one issue had a board game you could play with your friends during Van-ins

Looking good, Rick.
I'm working in Photoshop to change the lower grey panels to white. I want to recolor to overall yellow and detail this to look somewhat like my brothers van from the 70's.

I'm recoloring one also. It's a two-tone blue panel van, and is decked out with peace symbols, a daisy, and a big "Make Love Not War" poster on the roof. The recolor will be finished later today. I'll be printing mine on regular letter sized paper, so the model will be small, but buildable.

I owned a groovy VW Kombi van back in '71-'72. I had a ball with it, but I froze my butt off in the winter. There was very little heat, and a missing grommet floor seal around the gas pedal directed icy air right up the leg of my bell bottoms jeans. Those were the days.

CARtoons magazine also published several of these type of models. If I remember correctly it was an offshoot magazine of Hot Rod which would make sense...

Wish I had some of those old issues, I could be building some Far Out Groovy Funky Stuff right now...
