Walter rocket engine for Me163
Spotted this thread over on Kartonbau.de Thought a few people here might be interested....
http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=14406 This is the Walter engine used in the ME163B Rocket powered interceptor. It says it's for the Orlik one, but I see no reason why it couldn't also be fitted into the Modelik or Mally Modelarz ones as well. Due for release as a free model in the next few days. It looks like it's by the same designer as the free Spitfire Merlin engine and the ME109 Engine. Best Regards, Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

Thanks for pointing out this historical rocket engine Julian!
Apparently it had a power to weight ratio twice that of the Me262! However that C-stoff and T-stoff was nasty stuff... Another intriguing side branch of military aviation... Terry Ping-Pong Ball Cannon and N/Z scale Old West paper models (free samples) at: http://www.paperbeam.com |

The (Z-Stoff) was dropped in favour of hydrazine hydrate and methyl alcohol in solution called "C-Stoff" Much safer and produced nearly twice the thrust as the alcohol burned as well. The trouble was that if you got the Hydrogen Peroxide on your skin it would immediately catalyse and turn you into a ball of flame (OUCH!) Ruptured fuel tank anybody??? Yeah............ and on a plane without landing gear. There were rumors that more aircraft were lost because of hard landings on the skid, causing any residual "fuel" to spill into the cockpit, than were shot down by allied fighters.

There was an interview with Rudy Opitz who was the wing commander for the unit flying them, where he says that that rumour is nonsense and that as far as he knew only one pilot was actually killed by fuel spillage due to pilot error while flying one of these machines. In fact he says that the safety record was actually very good and that contrary to rumours they were a very easy aircraft to fly. They had to be, because as he said, most of his pilots had very few hours flying anything at all, let alone rocket planes. Oh damn! This means you guys have just spotted my only pet aviation subject.. :o Best Regards, Julian (Fozzy The Bear)
